Basics of Sawmilling & Adding Value to Your Trees Workshop
This course is designed for those beginners interested in operating a bandsaw mill and adding value through proper sawing of logs and handling/storage of lumber.
Ken Fosty, Certified Arborist & Professional Training Instructor provides this multi-media presentation combined with educational videos, hands-on operation and take-home handouts.
Topics include proper sawing techniques, wood properties, bandsaw maintenance, blade replacement, lubrication, peavey & cant hook tools, log arches and tongs for log handling.
Leveling the sawmill, engine and parts maintenance, sawmilling terms such as slabs, flitches, and cants.
Drying lumber properly using moisture meters as well as stickering and proper storage of lumber are explored.
Wood properties, lumber defects, proper lumber handling and measuring lumber properly using board feet are discussed.
An excellent introductory course for those individuals interested in the basics of sawmilling and adding value to your trees.
All participants take part in an outdoor hands-on sawmilling experience with lumber production. Sawmilling will be done under the supervision of the workshop Instructor.
